STUDIO CITY, CA (Newswire, 8/17/01) - The anticipated and eventual banishment of Krista Stegall, the foul-mouth waitress from the bayou, landed CBS and Big Brother 2 in unfamiliar territory of late: 3rd place in Nielsen's overnight metered market Nielsen ratings.

The voyeuristic series drew a 6.7 rating/11 share Thursday evening, a stark slump from its best-ever audience of a week earlier that saw the eviction of the cantankerous Kent Blackwelder.

Over the course of the next week, Big Brother 2 will play a game of time-slot hopscotch: both Saturday's and next Thursday's airings will be pre-empted in favor of NFL exhibition games, Tuesday's show will go on as usual, and a special episode on Wednesday, August 22nd, will air back in the program's original eight o'clock hour.

as long as it's not in 'smell-o-vision'. too much gas in that house!

really, i didn't think there would be a bb3 as i watched earlier in the summer, but i have a feeling with the higher ratings, there will be now. i want to cheer on avery next year!

hot, i don't know what you mean by 'a stark slump from'. does that mean the ratings went way up (as they seem to have) or down some? i thought kent's eviction got much higher ratings than previous shows...

To me, that reads as though the show with Kents eviction got a much higher rating than did the show involving Krista's. I can't imagine why, but that's how I read it.

The ratings are bound to suffer quite a bit from here on in as well.

With the schedule being all over the place, shows being shuffled around football games, and even missing an episode are probably going to tank the progress that was made. People are going to lose track of the program.

Quite frankly, this long spell with no nominations even has me stepping back a bit, it seems as though nothing is going to be happening for two weeks. Who knows what I'll be doing by the time it gets heated up again. Things seem to be stagnating just as it was reaching white hot. Just when they needed to turn the screw a bit tighter, we have a two week lull in the program.

It's unfortunate, but I think all this does not sound good, even CBS seems to be wavering on it's commitment to the program.

There won't be a BB3. Les Moonves didn't even want to talk about BB at his latest "State of the Network" address. The show brings nothing but negative publicity to the network, but it doesn't bring in the Survivor-like ratings to make it all worthwhile.

Snee,

The 'stark slump' wasn't a quote from me - I reposted the Newswire article verbatim.

http://wishingwellarts.com/BigBrother2/RatingsTracker.htm

According to the Neilsen ratings, the Thursday night episodes would only rank 79th among shows for the year - numbers that mean certain cancellation for a new Fall show. Sat and Tues shows both rank significantly lower than that.

The latest episode of BB2 came in 3rd in its timeslot last week behind reruns on ABC/NBC, and with the all upcoming preemptions, date shuffling and shift back to an 8pm timeslot, the overall ratings will likely be headed even lower.

I'm afraid CBS won't fool with this format again. And I think with the exception of the awesome, unbeatable Survivor and cutie potootie Jeff Probst (and MTV's Real World), that reality TV will be on its way out.

At the rate it is going the next BB will either be

- ALL professional actors

OR

- Ex-cons, prostitutes and junkies. The food challenge will be replaced by the 'fix' challenge. Instead of getting evicted, the marked houseguest will be executed. The viewers choice will be mode of execution.

"America would you rather see Justin "the butcher" Sebrick:

a) Hung by the neck until dead?
b) Electricuted until his eyeballs pop out?
c) Placed on the rack with a 1/2 turn every hour?

I agree with Snee...at first I thought they ruined this forever. With growing ratings I think there is a pretty fair chance there will be another one. Keep in mind they have the house/set all built and it all boils down to dollars and sense and if they are making $$$ on this, there will be more. Between the 900 # and the pay per view feeds I think they CBS is having a much higher revenue return then the average show that only gets ad bux.

As for Les Moonves, remember he was totally down on the show at a meeting that came RIGHT on the heels of the Justin knife incident, Mike Boogie's arrest thing becoming public and lousy ratings. The bottom line is going to be if they got viewership and if they made money.

Actually, while it is true that the total household ratings were higher when Kent was evicted, it was actually the highest yet in the 18-49 demographic (which is key for advertisers) last thursday (when Krista was evicted). So in other words, there is no danger of a slump yet, and CBS decision to put the finale up against Friends is a brave (and confident) one. Now, whether CBS is willing to deal with the negative publicity again is another matter.. We can always hope, and that they do something thats inbetween BB and BB2 next time..

I think even if CBS passes, that possibly Fox would pick it up....they are always willing to take up the slack for "bad taste tv". Can you spell D-A-R-V-A?

Ill tell you what folks the way things are going on now I would not be surprised if CBS did decide to make a BB3.. I think if they make a BB3 they should be smart enough to get people who can entertain the media and the people who watch on the internt, all be it Kent, Bunky & Will entertain us all but I am talking about some hardcore entertaining.. A comedian who knows how to tear the place apart some beautifull smart women for the men and some beautifull smart men for the women... All other reality shows that are a hit were a hit because of the image each charecter protrayed and brought to the table... Im talkin some salsa dancers and all flavor's welcome... and they should get rid of julie chen and get someone who can work the spot and is inresting to listen too, nowdays when you watch her you already know whats going to come out of her mouth... We need some spice is what Im talkin bout.. if CBS can do all that than this show called BB will tear a brand new hole in nealson and its ratings.. what do u think ?

I dunno if there will be a BB3 but I don't plan to watch it unless there are some serious changes... I'm going to go *OUT* of my way to try and get the message to the US BB staff to read my LFPs on the OZ BB and take that to heart.. I know I'm a "nobody" but there seem to be a few "somebody's" lurking around here so I'll make an effort

I loved BBI - and those who thought it were boring well I don't give them any credit since they obviously don't even know how to turn a channel lol... I totally loved the OZ BB - so I know betweent he best of those two shows the US BB could come up with a great BB 3

About BB being on FOX or any other network:

I'm thinking CBS owns the rights to the show for a certain number of years and may not give it up to the competition. I heard CBS has registered www.bigbrother20xx.com for the next 5 or 6 years. I suppose for the right money they would give it up, but at this point is anyone willing to pay it? And as long as CBS owns the rights can John De Mol shop it around?

Anybody heard what CBS's agreement with Endemol is?

Please, oh please give us BigBrother3 and can it start today? At least I might get to see someone that might interest me today!

Truly, I'm not much of a tv watcher but I do watch BigBrother. Last season on vacation I turned on the TV and caught BigBrother and Survivor. I didn't get the Survivor bug but I became a faithful watcher of BigBrother. The web updates and feeds did hook me bigtime. This world is not made up of people who all want to watch sitcoms(which is why this years BB hasn't been as good as last year I might add) and talk shows. Give us real, real people and some fun things for them to do!

Please, please, please give us BigBrother3!!!

Hampsterfan - saw the same article, where Les says it's "very possible". that it's always been a "summer experiment" - translation -"look, the ratings we're getting now at 9:00 don't suck, and it's not that expensive to produce - what the hell else are we gonna put on in the summer?" Which means that even tho' ol' Lester may find it personally distasteful look for BB3 next summer - IT'S AAWWWWWWWNNNNN!

From The Starr Report at PageSix.com...

Les is more: Moonves eyes 'BB3'

CBS honcho Les Moonves says the network is "seriously considering" another season of "Big Brother," based on the success of "Big Brother 2."

"It's very possible," Moonves tells Nancy O'Dell on tonight's "Access Hollywood" (7:30 p.m./Ch. 4). "It's obviously been a very controversial show. We've always talked about ‘Big Brother' being a summer experiment."

Moonves also reveals that "Survivor 2" contestant Colby Donaldson is huddling with movie powerhouse Steven Spielberg, although he doesn't get into any details."We've seen the first couple of episodes [of ‘Survivor 3']," Moonves says. "I don't want to oversell it, but it's as good as any ‘Survivor' has been."

Whoops...I just realized someone else posted some of this already.

From the Morning Star Telegramph.....

Les Moonbest in an exclusive interview with this reporter stated that there will indeed be a BigBrother 3, slated for midsummer 2002. There will be some revamping for the upcoming program. Mr. Moonbest stated that the premise will be updated and the format shifted. " We will place 12 nonactors in the house for three months and will not allow for any voting of any kind until the end. There will be competitions and challenges, but the only way houseguests will leave is to request a voluntary removal" stated Mr. Moonbest. He went on to say that the houseguests will be pitted against each other on a continous basis and that contestants will be allowed to leave the show when that are totally fed up and can't take the abuse any longer.

That would be nice Terry!!
Especially if they were really 'non-actors', unlike the actor wannabes in BB2!

Hey Terry, is the Morning Star Telegraph a legitimate newspaper? I noticed that the name wasn't spelled the right way...it should be Moonves not Moonbest. Anyways, I too saw the interview on Access Hollywood and when Nancy O'Dell asked him what the probability was of the show returning he said "more than a 50% chance, we'll have to see how things go". I think we should get a petition started and tell CBS how much we want the show back. Every bit of support will help. Also, the petition should state something about bringing back the free live feeds on the internet. I'm hoping that the season finale will beat out the premiere of Friends. That would be "Off the Hook"!!!

Aja, you are only going to get either actor wannabes, or people wanting some sort of public life to enter this game show. Not too many "regular" people would want to put up with the junk these people have put up with if there is no chance for a payday at the end besides by winning the game. Look at how much grief has been thrown on just about if not every HG by people on this board.

BB3 would not cost too much to produce compared to regular TV shows. It's up mostly against re-runs during the summer. It seems to come in either 1st or second in its time slot each show (3 a week). It brings pub to CBS, and there is no such thing as bad pub. If they could get some of the reporters that find this bad stuff the contestants have done in their past to check the backgrounds of future HG's they would not have to worry about any more Justins.

For all those reasons business wise BB3 could very well come about.
