I watched Big Brother 1 as faithfully as I watch Big Brother 2. I am pretty sure that Big Brother 2 has better ratings considering the fact that it only comes on 3 times a week, unlike the first one that came on 6 days a week. You don't get tired of it as quickly. Besides, the people in it this year are crazy! It is fun to watch people humiliate themselves on national tv. There wasn't too much of that last year. It became boring and predictable since the public evicted the houseguests. The only turn was when Brittany was evicted.

If you don't include the shows last year that were on right after survivor, BB2 does indeed now have better ratings, though it started out about the same.. So while the rates went down and then leveled last year, they actually have been going up (albeit gradually) this time.. Some of the improvement in viewer share is just because it is an hour later (when more people watch) but that still means more people are watching! (Tuesday's episode was the highest rated on yet in the 18-49 demographic)..

Personally, I have watched all but two of the first season and all of them so far this year.. And feel an ideal BB would probably be a blend of the two..

God, there is no comparison between BB1 and BB2! I don't know about ratings but I know that I thought that BB1 was snoozeville - the early evictees were the only ones with much personality (**Mellbell ducks under catapulted eggs, tomatoes and old underwear**) I can't even remember all of their names anymore! Hey, some of the HGs this year might be kinda nuts but at least they're interesting.. also, making them nominate and vote against one another makes for MUCH better drama. It becomes a much more interesting study of psychology (which is of course why we're all watching it - no prurient motives at all )

Mellbell--Just to help you out I've compiled the names of BB1's HG's. Will, Jordan, Karen, Brittany, George, Cassandra, Jamie, Curtis, Josh and Eddie.

Guess that gives it away for me...I was much more emotionally hooked on the first cast than this years. When Curtis shead a tear for Brittany after she was evited I felt something. When Bunky broke down while voting to oust Krista I snorted in disgust.

*sigh* I still watch though. It's like watching a bad train wreck happen...I just can't look away.

What sense does it make to compare these shows if you don't get the main difference at all?

BB1 was better "Reality TV".

BB2 is better "Amateur TV".
(plus it's obviously better edited, re-edited, staged, pre-scripted, manipulated, faked, rigged, dramatizised, better music, better close-up, better actors, better agents, more interested controversy, better planned, better brainwashed, more 'action' on TV, better merchandising, more money for the HGs and it will be also the better end i'm sure, but maybe not for everyone!!!) :)

The time of Reality TV is over, obviously also on the net. So i can't say which i preferred.
I like more the origin style but BB2001 was the better dramaturgy in all its different 'angles'.

If i analyse only the HGs then like last year i had only two faves: Jordan and Eddie and now Shannon and Will.

I was happy when Eddie won and i will be happy if Will wins.

It's naive to think it will go back to the origin.
So who really cares?

I like both "versions" on their own style, but don't like how the audience of BB2001 is fooled.

BB1 had way better competitions. I am so tired of "take a step forward if your answer is". Remember Eddie in the 'big suit' hopping around on one leg and winning?
This year is edited more slickly due to the extra time between shows, but that allows the editors to fine tune the manipulation and (unknowingly?) put their personal stamp on the proceedings.
Last year was reality TV, a true psycological experiment. This year is about chain smoking, frayed nerves and yet more desperate attempts to sex-up the show. I like that, but as usual they could have taken it way farther, to what I think is the logical extreme.
CBS and the producers of BB2 are still playing way too safe and treating the HGs with kid gloves. It might as well be scripted the way they obviously coach the HGs. Just leave them to their own devices and watch them self-destruct.
This years live feed cash grab and HOH subplot killed the really unique quality of the show, interactiveness. If I can't vote for which loser is tossed out I might as well be watching my local news to find out which Member of Parliament is linked to which scandal.
Which was better? Antiques Road Show, true reality TV.

Up until a couple of weeks ago, I likes this one better. Still do, I think. The actors are scummier and create a lot more passion in the responses. Plus, I enjoy seeing the HG's sink into the evil side of the human experience.

However, I have to say I think that CBS has cut its own throat by ending the the game so early with this week's set up for Hardy. Unless they do something to ensure that Hardy is evicted or at least rendered powerless, the final few weeks are going to be a waste of time.

Thanks Lexie for refreshing my memory on the BB1 HGs- it was truly weighing on my mind - I was thinking, "First I forget the BB1 houseguests' names - what next? My telephone number? Omigod, I think I'm even forgetting how to make brownies!", and that last thought sent me straight to bed with a headache....

STILL like BB2 best - at least no-one is afraid to smooch someone else (ie Brittany) and they're not so unbelievably phobic about the cameras (ie Jamie)....

If you like Bb2 better than you should ask Arnie that he should totally stage Bb3. Then its "real" comedy again. :)

I think that there are really two questions.
1 - Which year had the better cast
2 - Which year had the better show

My vote:
#1 - 2001
#2 - 2000

What I must say you outdid yourself with your post. I stand by my theory that someone could ask you for your grocery list and you would find a way to work a Hardy bashing comment in it.

LOLOL thanks for the yuk.

As for which is better I think the production is far better this year, and much as I hold most of last years hampsters in fond regard they were too dull. Problem is they went to the total extreme and as I posted earlier we were given Jerry Springer rejects and professional actors versus genuinely interesting folks. I can tell you I enjoyed watching last year more even though I think it's produced better this year. I just wish they got the casting right.

My whole family enjoyed BB1 more than BB2. I don't pay any attention to ratings, though.
